I hope you enjoy these pictures. I wished we could put them on a bulletin board or something - to help us remember these wonderful men and women. I wished everyone could have a chance to serve communion to those who can't come to church any more. It truly is an honor to serve them.
Larry, Tyler and I had the honor of taking communion to the shut-ins a couple of months ago and it was a blessing to us.
We take coming together to meet and fellowship with like minded brothers and sisters for granted. These women and men would give anything to come worship with us. But they can't. Unfortunately, it's too easy for us to forget that they were once vibrant and active for Lord. They took food to the sick, the prayed for people, they led singing, they taught classes, they were involved and always ready to help others. they were real people, moms, dads, sons, daughters, just like us. Now, they are unable to do for themselves. They need us to remember and care.
We took photos of most of our shut-ins. We didn't get Helen Davis's photo. If you know Helen, you won't be surprised that she didn't necessarily want her picture taken until she had a chance to get all fixed up! Helen takes great care with her hair and makeup and the morning we got there, she still had on her robe and that just wouldn't do. We'll go back later to get her picture. = ) She is sharper than a tack! and just a real joy to be around. She's got lots of health problems but doesn't dwell on them. She might mention a doctor's visit or a condtion that's causing a little difficulty but she doesn't sit and feel sorry for herself. She just puts on some lipstick and everything's fine! = ) Thankfully, Helen is still able to live at her home.
Please remember these precious people in prayer. Each one would love more than anything to be able to come to worship with us on Sundays. One day, if we live long enough, we may find ourselves sitting in a nursing home, praying someone will come by and visit. Are we teaching our children, by our example, to serve the elderly and sick? /Carol Draehn 6/14/2010

Durwood Rosenberg is at Country View Manor. He is a hoot, to be sure! His voice is so high pitched, it's hard to understand him at times. But he has a wild story to tell each time we see him. He went to R&B for years. His sister, Jean, ran the Benevolent Center before moving ot East Texas several years ago. Durwood remembers working in the cotton fields around this area, every day. He never missed work or left early. But one day, he felt an incredible urge to leave and go home. Nobody knew what was going on because Durwood never left early. When he got home, he found out that one of his sisters had died, just then. He thinks God sent a special message to him, making him feel so compelled to go home, so he could be there with his family.
Eldora Birdsong is the mother of Sherry Shelton. Eldora taught school at Terrell - high school English, I believe, for many, many years. She was very much a student of the bible and very involved in Ladies' Bible Class until she just couldn't go anymore.
Verna Ma Wesley is fine mentally, she just can't get around without assistance. She broke a leg or hip... and just was never able to completely get over that. She is so appreciative of the people who come bring communion each Sunday. Sweet, sweet lady.
Sarah Dishman is the sister of the late Lila Holmes and KL's aunt. Sarah's and Lila's dad was one of the founding members of R&B. Sarah's mind isn't so good any more. One time we went in and she said, "This is a very special night for me!" We asked her why, and she said that she was graduating from high school with honors. She told us her GPA, and I can't remember exactly what it was, but she sure did. It was a very good memory and she was getting to relive it! Just a few seconds later, we asked her about her graduation and she looked at us like we were crazy. She didn't know what we were talking about. But at least she had moment to enjoy that memory.
Eva Henry - what a gracious lady! She is almost always sitting in the lobby with her little hat on. Eva - not EEEva but Eva - like the "e" sound in "egg" - . is very thankful to see our guys who bring communion. She is quiet but will talk if you visit with her. I'm sure she was one of those little ladies who never missed church.
Jed Smith - Jed is the man who came to church one Sunday - he walked over from the nursing home all by himself (without permission!). He just needed to be at church. Jed doesn't say much, but you can tell he misses being able to worship with other Christians.

| William Preston - Willy Preston used to be the preacher at Westside, I think. We thought he was too sick to take communion when we first came into the room. He was asleep, but his roommate said we could wake him up. We were so glad we did. What a wonderful, godly man! We asked how he was and he said he fine. He said every morning he wakes up and says "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. I've got my health, friends and family and that's all anyone needs." Willy showed us a poster made by the children at his church. He repeated the verse "This is the Day.." several times while we were there. We thought it a great gift of God that all those years that Willy put God's Word in his head now it is clearly written on his heart. God's Words are what comes out of Willy because they are in his heart. By the way, I don't know if Willy ever gets up out of the bed, yet he rejoices every day.

Christine Crist - she is the mother of Tommy (and wife, Peggy) Crist. Christine is a little bundle of fire and sociability! She get's around in her wheelchair better than some people get around on two feet. She met the couple across the hall from her by chance one day and found out that they were members of the church of Christ, too. Now each week, they all take communion together, Christine, Happy and Joy.

Happy and Joy Terrell - Are those great names? They relocated from out of state to Windsor because their son lives her in Terrell. Happy has heart problems, and Joy has Parkinsons really bad. Joy has great difficult eating, swallowing. When we walked into their room, a room filled with family photos when they were so active and young, we saw Joy, her head bent over touching her chest. She can't raise her head. Her husband, Happy, sits next to her in their matching recliners, holding her hand as often as not. Happy is so protective of his wife, and watches carefully as she eats so that he can get help if there's a problem. Happy is very conscious of having the right frame of mind when he takes communion. He has asked that we come a little later in the morning so that they will be back from breakfast. He's not being ungrateful. He has good reasons. First, he will not leave Joy to eat by herself, in order to come back to the quiet of his room for communion. And second, he doesn't feel it appropriate to take communion in the cafeteria with all the noise and distractions. He wants his focus to be on Jesus. We decided to make Windsor our last stop so that Happy and Joy would have time to finish breakfast and be back in the room.
The last two times we went, Happy and Joy wanted us to sing with them their favorite song, "Where the rose never fades." They tear up as we sing, but we know it's because they have this wonderful hope of heaven, when Joy will not suffer anymore. Something really made me think as I sat by Joy and held her hand when she started to cry. Happy held her other hand. As we sang, I heard this little woman who could not even raise her head up, who is barely able to speak, sing alto perfectly. Who was she in her real life? I mentioned her singing so well and she started telling us about their daughter who is a professional musician and how music had been such a blessing to her. Joy wasn't always this little shell of a woman, trapped in a body that no longer works very good. She was mom, a wife, a godly woman who loved Jesus, her family and friends.. One of her greatest comfort now, is singing that song about heaven.
